What is SNAP?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as “food stamps,” helps low-income individuals and families buy food by providing benefits through the Lone Star Card.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To qualify for SNAP, you must meet income and resource limits based on your household size. Most able-bodied adults between ages 16–59 must also meet certain work requirements.

How do I apply for SNAP benefits?

You can apply for SNAP in several ways:

  2. By mail or in person: Complete a paper application and return it to your local HHSC office

How long is the approval process?

SNAP applications can take up to 30 days to be processed. If you qualify for emergency benefits, your application will be prioritized.

How much money will I get if I’m approved?

The benefit amount depends on several factors, including your household size, income, deductions, and expenses.

Can I get emergency SNAP?

Yes. All applications are automatically screened for emergency SNAP benefits, which may provide assistance within a few days if you meet specific criteria.
