The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a Federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans, including elderly people, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance at no cost. It is a cooperative effort between HHS, Feeding Texas, Texas Department of Agriculture, and USDA to efficiently and effectively distribute nutritious commodities.
TEFAP receives commodity foods from the United States Department of Agriculture for its low-income and unemployed populations. It provides food and administrative funds to States to supplement the diets of these groups. Texas food banks are contracted to warehouse and distribute these products to regional nonprofit agencies that provide food to households or serve meals directly to the public.
