Food Bank Programs
We have many programs that offer assistance to the people of the Big County.
Our Social Services Outreach Coordinator helps increase enrollment through food stamp application assistance in 13 Texas counties.
On the first and third Tuesday of each month, the Food Bank distributes 60 boxes of food to a rapidly growing segment of the population that fall through the cracks of the system.
On Friday afternoons these children pick up an ordinary backpack filled with kid-friendly foods. On Monday morning, they return the backpack to be filled again for the next weekend.
There are a number of staple items that are rarely donated, yet are always requested by our agencies. In early, 2005 the Food Bank began purchasing several of these items at wholesale prices and passing the cost on to the agencies.
The Food Bank of West Central Texas provides food to a service area of over 12,000 square miles. Some of our member agencies must travel 90 to 100 miles to pick up their order. This is a huge problem because of the cost of fuel, the lack of vehnciles or trailers to haul lare quantities of food, and the shortage of manpower.
The staff at the Food Bank of West Central Texas developed a program a few years ago to distribute excess bread and produced instead of tossing it in the trash. On the last Friday of every month, the employees open the doors to the Public.
